PSU Catholic Center To Be Named For Sue Paterno

The Penn State Catholic student center planned for East Park Avenue will bear a well-known local name, area Catholic leaders announced Monday.

In a news release, they announced that the facility, just north of the University Park campus, will be dubbed the Suzanne Pohland Paterno Catholic Student Faith Center.

Paterno, who lives nearby and has supported plans for the faith center, is an honorary co-chair for the $6.5 million campaign to construct the building. Her husband, university football Coach Joe Paterno, is the other honorary co-chair.

Sue Paterno is expected to join the Rev. Joseph V. Adamec, who is bishop of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, and other church leaders for a ceremonial groundbreaking at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The center will be located at 113 E. Park Ave., State College.

Construction is expected to last about a year. It’s a privately funded project of the Penn State Catholic Campus Ministry.

Features in the facility are to include a chapel, reconciliation rooms, a library and a residence for Benedictine fathers.
