The Pugh Street garage roof won’t be out of commission for too long if State College borough workers have anything to say about it.

On Monday afternoon, State College police and Alpha Fire Company members responded to a call about hazardous conditions at the garage. Part of the wall running around the roof had been damaged earlier in the day, leaving a piece of reinforced concrete hanging out over the street below.

Alpha Fire crews stabilized the wall on Monday by using heavy rope to tie the wall to a nearby lamppost, which Centre Region Code officer Walt Schneider calls “a temporary measure.”

State College borough public works director Mark Whitfield says in an email that borough crews will make a temporary repair by Wednesday, with plans to make a permanent repair over the summer.

Schneider told StateCollege.com that the borough will likely use a private contractor to repair the wall. The exact timeline for making a permanent repair will depend on the contractor, he said.

Whitfield says the incident was not a hit-and-run or an act of vandalism. He explains that an elderly man accidentally ran into the wall with his car on Monday, then immediately called in the damage and apologized for the incident.
