Route 322 Detour Postponed Until October

A daytime detour for maintenance work on a section of U.S. Route 322 between Potters Mills and Boalsburg has been postponed again to avoid impacting special event traffic.

Shoulder cutting operations and an associated detour will now take place in early October, according to a PennDOT news release on Friday.

The work was originally scheduled to occur this week but was postponed to avoid impacting traffic headed to Penn State’s Ag Progress Days. It was initially rescheduled for Aug. 14-17, but PennDOT said on Friday it will be rescheduled again because of Grange Fair and Penn State student move-in.

When work resumes in October, flaggers will direct westbound traffic off Route 322 at Sand Mountain Road, and drivers will then follow Route 144 to Route 45 and back to Route 322. Local traffic will be permitted access to their homes.

The detour will be lifted each afternoon.

Eastbound traffic headed toward Lewistown will pass through the work zone under flagging conditions.

“PennDOT urges drivers to build extra time into their travel schedules, obey posted speed limits in this and all work zones and always buckle up,” the department wrote in a news release.

The department plans to issue another update before the work and detour begin.

Crews from PennDOT’s Centre County Maintenance office will be conducting the work, which is designed to improve drainage.

“Shoulder-cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulders, improves drainage and allows water to leave the roadway, which lessens the potential for icing conditions that are hazardous to drivers, weaken pavement and cause the formation of potholes during winter months,” according to PennDOT.
