Monday in court, during testimony from alleged victim No. 4, pictures of the boy wearing LaVar Arrington’s uniform and of him posing with Arrington and other Penn State football players flashed on a screen.
The recollections and public testimony of the man compelled Arrington to express his remorse for not noticing the accuser’s anger and pain when he was a child, penning a column for the Washington Post on Tuesday.
“It’s mind-blowing to realize that a kid I took an active interest in during my time at school was suffering right in front of me and I had no idea that the pain allegedly came from someone in my own football program,” Arrington wrote.
“20-20 hindsight brings so much more clarity. But at the time I thought we were his place of refuge from what he was going through at home or in school. As much as I saw and talked with him, I felt, in my own way, I was making a difference in his life.
“I hate everything that has happened, and now I must admit I feel even worse, knowing what allegedly was happening so close to me, and that I was unaware.”
Monday, the boy firmly stood his ground on the witness stand, saying Sandusky molested him in the locker room showers and hotels while providing gifts to ensure he stayed quiet.
Sandusky faces 52 counts in a child sex abuse case and has maintained his innocence. His trial continues at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Bellefonte.
