School Board to Meet During Holiday to Discuss Budget Development

Students may have one more day off from school to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, but the State College Area Board of Directors will convene on Monday night with a meeting that will put in motion some discussions that will come up again. 

The sinkhole under Memorial Field and what to do about it was a hot topic at several board meetings through the fall and on Monday night, the board could vote to approve the agreement with the State College Borough that will allow the the Borough’s Public Works Department to make necessary changes and fixes to the field, including filling in the sinkhole. 

Memorial Field is used by nearly every State College Area High School team in the fall and spring and the sinkhole has been under the property since the district bought the land nearly a century ago. The board has been looking into major renovations, including adding locker rooms and could discuss whether relocation is an option in the future. 

At it’s next regular meeting, the State College Borough Council will vote on adopting the agreement with the school district. 

The board will also vote on a motion to approve the preliminary high school project schedule to referendum. The board discussed the referendum at the last meeting and several members said they want to see as much community involvement as possible regarding the high school project. 

Up for discussion on Monday night is the proposed 2013-14 school calendar year and ongoing budget planning for 2013-14, which will continue through March, at least, with a crucial step being the board weighing previous years’ proposals from Gov. Tom Corbett, who has dealt drastic cuts to schools across the state in recent years. 

The board meeting is at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at 131 W. Nittany Ave. and is open to the public and can be viewed live on C-NET.
