Snow Results in Speed Reduction on I-99

Update: Normal speed limits on I-99 and I-80 were restored as of 2:20 p.m., according to PennDOT

PennDOT reduced the maximum speed on I-99 in Centre County on Tuesday morning as snow made for hazardous travel conditions.

Speeds were reduced on the highway to 45 miles per hour in Centre, Blair and Bedford counties, as well as on I-80 between mile markers 84 and 194 in Clearfield, Centre and Clinton counties.

‘Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow,’ a news release said. ‘PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.’

Motorists were advised to avoid any unnecessary travel.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the region through 4 p.m. Western portions of Centre and Blair counties could get 4-6 inches of snow, while more eastern areas, including the State College area, were expected to receive 2-4 inches.

State College, Bellefonte, Penns Valley, Bald Eagle and Philipsburg-Osceola school districts all closed schools for the day and canceled after-school activities.
