Baseball fans who attend the State College Spikes home opener next week, might get a chance to knock one out of the park. The team is putting together a special promotion to crown one lucky person the Spikes’ one millionth fan. You guessed it — that person will have a chance to win $1 million!
Having the one millionth fan show up on the season’s first day is one of those things that buck the odds. “It’s almost a dream come true that it happens on opening day,” says David Wells, manager of promotions and community relations for the Spikes.
All fans 18 and over who attend the home opener will be eligible to enter the contest. Nine contestants will get a shot at the prize. Once the game ends, they’ll pick names at random until only one is left. That fan will be crowned the One Millionth Spikes Fan. He or she will automatically win season tickets for life.
But it doesn’t end there. The one millionth fan will roll four dice for the chance to win the big prize. If all four dice come up with the winning logo on top — it’s good for a million bucks.
“Everything we do is for our fans, so it only made sense to reward our fans with the chance to win one million bucks,” Wells says. “We want opening day to be a true memory-maker. It’s a big event and a big milestone in our franchise history so we really want to make it as big as possible.”
The fun begins before the game even starts, with live music and remote-controlled stunt plane displays. Two live deer will be at the stadium, representing the team’s mascot Ike the Spike.
Coach of the three-peat national championship Penn State men’s wrestling team, Cael Sanderson, will throw out the first pitch.
“The big joke around the office is that if anybody screws up, he’s going to put them in a chokehold or something,” Wells jokes.
