Start of Pike Street Construction in Lemont Delayed

The start of phase two of a long-planned road construction project in Lemont will be pushed back a few days.

Work on the Pike Street traffic calming and accessibility project now will begin on Monday, May 23, according to an update from College Township. It was originally scheduled to start on Wednesday, May 18.

Phase two will include curbing, stormwater upgrades, delineated parallel parking, curb ramps and full sidewalk along both sides of Pike Street between Elmwood and Dale streets. Phase one, which was completed in 2021, included water and gas line relocations.

Motorists will encounter traffic changes during construction, which is expected to conclude by mid-October.

One-way traffic on Pike Street will be maintained heading northeast toward East College Avenue between Elmwood and Dale Streets. Construction activities will occur on one side of Pike Street, while traffic is directed through the opposite lane.

“Every effort will be made to ensure that access to the businesses located on Pike Street remains open throughout the project,” according to a township news release.

Drivers looking to come from College Avenue to reach Dale Street and beyond will be detoured to turn left onto Elmwood Street, which can then be followed to the Pike Street intersection.

The traffic pattern is similar to the one used during phase one last year and will be in effect throughout construction.

Bowman Excavating, Paving and Concrete of Bellefonte is the contractor on the $1.5 million project. All work will be weather- and schedule-dependent.

“College Township reminds the traveling public to use caution in work zones, obey posted speed limits and to follow official detour signs,” the news release stated.
