The State College Area school board is mulling whether to move its regular meetings and work sessions to a new location.

For years, the school board has hosted meetings in a first-floor conference room at 131 W. Nittany Ave., the school district’s administration building. The carpeted conference room overlooks part of Memorial Field.

The building itself dates to 1924, when it opened as the Nittany Avenue Grammar School. It was converted years later to become the district’s administrative home.

But whether the building remains the best venue for board meetings has been a source of debate. During heated discussions over a proposed high-school expansion several years ago, some residents complained that the conference room is too small for vibrant, inclusive community discussions. Particularly during the summer months, the room can be sweltering.

A communications subcommittee of the school board is expected to address the venue question at a meeting Wednesday. According to an agenda, the group will discuss change-of-venue options starting at 6:30 p.m. in the board’s current meeting space.

Other agenda items include plans for ongoing Memorial Field discussions.

The meeting will be open to the public.
