Friday, June 17

Movies

‘Super 8,’ the No. 1 movie at box offices nationwide last weekend, continues to show this weekend at the College 9 Theatre and UEC 12 Theater. Written and directed by J.J. Abrams, and produced by Steven Spielberg, the film follows several young friends as they witness a mysterious train wreck and investigate bizarre happenings in their small town.

At the Cinema 6 Discount Theater, ‘African Cats,’ a nature documentary about two cat families, is among the movies showing.

At the Tussey Mountain Amphitheater, the ‘Movies on the Mountain’ series will kick off at 9 p.m. with a showing of ‘The Blind Side.’ Special events will begin earlier than that, though, and food will be available. Details are available on this event page.

In downtown State College, the State Theatre is scheduled to show ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’ daily through June 23. This documentary focuses on Chauvet Cave, in southern France, and its ancient cave paintings.

Live Performances

In College Township, the Lemont Concert Series will continue at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners. The concerts are held on the Village Green.

State College Community Theatre is set to present ‘No Sex Please, We’re British,’ a comedy, at the Boal Barn Playhouse in Boalsburg. The show, about a young bride mistakenly inundated with pornography, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Another show is slated for Saturday.

The ‘Music Nights at the Marsh’ series will continue with a 6:30 p.m. performance by Ancient Echoes at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.

The Penn State School of Theatre will present ‘Five Guys Named Moe,’ a musical that follows a man named Nomax after his girlfriend leaves him. The production, to continue through June 25, is scheduled for an 8 p.m. show at the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center on South Allen Street, State College.

Community Event

The annual Bellefonte Cruise will begin at 6 p.m., with cruising permitted in the downtown. A sock hop will follow at 8 p.m. on the Diamond in downtown Bellefonte. More details are available on this event page.

Food

 The State College Downtown Farmers Market continues on Locust Lane (across from the HUB lawn) between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue. The market is held Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Most of the fruits and vegetables sold are seasonal. Some of the vendors sell baked goods, canned goods and crafts all season long. All vendors produce or grow what they sell.

Bars and Clubs

The Autoport in State College will have happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Guided Sound, featuring bohemian funk and reggae, is scheduled to play in the evening.

At Bar Bleu in State College, happy hour will run from 9 to 11 p.m. Lowjack will play starting at 10:30 p.m.

In Toftrees, Sveltones will play at Down Under Steakhouse starting at 8 p.m. And at the Gingerbread Man in State College, DJ Boner will entertain starting at 10 p.m.

Saturday, June 18

Community Events

ClearWater Conservancy will hold its annual Spring Creek Family Festival starting at 10 a.m. at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center. The event, to be held rain or shine, features a variety of natural and conservation-oriented exhibits, live music and local food. More details are available on this event page.

Tait Farm, off U.S. Route 322 just east of Boalsburg, will host the Summer Solstice Celebration starting at 1 p.m. Local food and beverage samplings will be available, along with hands-on art activities, a farmers’ market, an art exhibit and hayrides.

The Bellefonte Cruise will continue with a car, truck and motorcycle show in the borough, plus vehicle judging and a parade. Complete details are available via the official event website, which is linked on this page.

Millbrook Marsh Nature Center will host its annual Romantic Moonlight Walk starting at 8:30 p.m. It’s not geared toward children, event organizers have said. The event may be canceled if foul weather develops.

Live Performance

The Music at Penn’s Woods Festival Orchestra will play starting at 7:30 p.m. in Esber Recital Hall on Penn State’s University Park campus. A pre-concert talk is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Ticket and other information is posted on this page.

Sunday, June 19

Sports

The first pitch in the State College Spikes’ home opener is slated for 6:05 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. But lots of other attractions — including live music — are scheduled there earlier Sunday as part of the baseball-season opening celebrations. Complete details are included in this earlier report.

Live Music

South Hills School of Business and Technology will host Heritage Brass in the third concert of the school’s Music Picnic series.The picnic is scheduled to start at 5 p.m., with music to follow at 6 p.m. The gathering will be held on the school grounds on Waupelani Drive in State College.

The Allegheny Ridgerunners, featuring bluegrass, country and folk music, will play in Bellefonte’s Summer Sounds from the Gazebo series. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in Talleyrand Park. Organizers suggest that attendees bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Special Event

‘What Do Actors Really Do?,’ an informational gathering put on by the Next Stage, will be held at 3 p.m. at the State Theatre. It will spotlight the process of creating a live performance.
