Friday, Oct. 28

‘In Time,’ a new film featuring Justin Timberlake, presents a future world in which people stop aging at age 25. They must work to buy themselves more time. A young man — played by Timberlake — ends up with more time than he can imagine, and must escape corrupt authorities. The movie is playing this weekend at the Carnegie 9 Theatre and UEC 12 Theater. 

In ‘The Rum Diary,’ featuring Johnny Depp, an American journalist takes a job at a local Puerto Rican newspaper in the 1950s. He struggles to find a balance between the island culture and the expatriates who live there. The movie is playing this weekend at the Carnegie 9 Theatre. 

In ‘The Dark Side of Oz,’ set for Friday, the State Theatre will combine Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in a unified presentation.

Community Events

Starting at 7 p.m., the Penn State Lion Ambassadors will provide Lantern Tours on campus.

The Penn State Forensic Science Club, starting at 8 p.m., will host a haunted house on campus. A second haunted-house session is scheduled for Sunday.

Also starting at 8 p.m., Love and Light Productions will present a ‘Rocky Horror’ show at the Arena Bar and Grill, off North Atherton Street. Another show is set for 11 p.m., with additional shows to follow on Saturday and Sunday nights.

The Next Stage is scheduled to present the production ‘The Year of Magical Thinking’ at 7 p.m. at the State Theatre. The production is scheduled to continue through Nov. 6.

To benefit volunteer fire companies in the area, a Thriller Thrive Donation Drive is set for 6 p.m. at C3 Sports Community Center.

Food

 The State College Downtown Farmers Market continues on Locust Lane (across from the HUB lawn) between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue. The market is held Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Most of the fruits and vegetables sold are seasonal. Some of the vendors sell baked goods, canned goods and crafts all season long. All vendors produce or grow what they sell.

  Bars and Clubs

The Autoport in State College will have happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. A Halloween party is planned. 

At Bar Bleu in State College, happy hour will run from 9 to 11 p.m. Lowjack will play starting at 10:30 p.m.

In Toftrees, the Down Under Steakhouse will host happy hour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; David Zetnar will play at 8 p.m. And at the Gingerbread Man in State College, DJ Boner will entertain starting at 10 p.m.; happy hour will run from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Sports

Both the Penn State women’s soccer and the Penn State women’s volleyball teams are scheduled to play at home at 7 p.m. Details are available through this event page. 

Saturday, Oct. 29

Community Events

A drug-collection event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the State College Municipal Building, 243 S. Allen St. Officials will be on hand to collect unwanted and expired prescription medicines — no questions asked. Details are available in this earlier report. 

Black Moshannon State Park will host a haunted bog walk at 8 p.m. A similar event oriented toward younger folks is scheduled for earlier in the evening. 

Schlow Centre Region Library will host the Underground Artists Marketplace starting at 1 p.m. The arts-and-crafts venue will feature local artisans.

Sports

The Penn State football team will take on the Fighting Illini of Illinois at 3:30 in Beaver Stadium. Complete PSU football coverage is available through the StateCollege.com football pagethis earlier news story.

The Penn State women’s volleyball team will take on Nebraska at 8 p.m. in Rec Hall.

Sunday, Oct. 30

Community Events

The 66th annual Centre Region Halloween Costume Parade will assemble starting at 6:30 p.m. on Burrowes Road. Complete details are available in this prior post.

The Discovery Space museum, in downtown State College, will host a Not-So-Spooky Halloween event from noon to 6 p.m.

From 3 to 6 p.m., Centre LifeLink EMS and the State College Spikes will co-host a Family Spook Fest in College Township.

Sports

The Penn State field-hockey team will face Michigan State at noon at the university’s Field Hockey Complex.
