Temperatures to Drop 30 Degrees by Saturday, Light Snow Expected

Prepare for some weather whiplash.

After a string of unusually warm and mild days, temperatures are going to take a sudden turn for the chilly this week.

Accuweather meteorologist Mark Paquette says the temperature on Tuesday is expected to reach 74 degrees – close to the record high for October – but that won’t keep temperatures from falling about 30 degrees by the end of the week.

The shift starts on Wednesday, with an expected high of 58 degrees. This is expected to drop to 52 by Friday, but Paquette says that “Saturday is really where the bottom falls out,” with a high of only 42 degrees.

“The good news is, it won’t stay around forever,” he says. “By early next week, we should see a pretty dramatic warm up and get back to above average temperatures.”

Before that happens, the area will see the first snow of the season – just in time for Penn State’s Saturday home game against Maryland.

Things will start off with some afternoon rain showers on Friday, which will slowly morph into a mix with snow overnight. By Saturday, Paquette expects snow flurries throughout the area. He says the roads may be slick in some spots, but he expects no major accumulation.

This game of temperature tug-of-war will continue throughout November, with spells of warm days followed by periods of below-average temperatures.

“I don’t think we’ll be locked into the deep freeze until after Christmas,” Paquette says.

He says this year’s cold snaps will be shorter and slightly warmer than last year’s bitter winter, but it’s not all good news: this winter is shaping up to be even snowier than last year.

“Some people may be alright with trading in the bitter cold we had last winter for some more snow,” Paquette says. “It’s a give and take.”
