Festival weekend is in the rearview mirror until next year, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to see and do around Happy Valley this weekend.
The Spikes have a number of special promotions Friday and Saturday at Medlar Field. State College, Lemont and Bellefonte all host free outdoor concerts and Tussey Mountain has another movie under the stars. The PA Military Museum has a special Vietnam living history bivouac.
Plus there are several special events to get you outdoors and having fun, from celebrations at Black Moshannon and the PA Fish and Boat Commission site to Wings in the Park to the Splash Pedal & Dash triathlon at Welch Pool. All this and much, much more is happening around the area this weekend.

FRIDAY
Spikes Host Doubledays
The Spikes welcome Washington Nationals affiliate Auburn Doubledays for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. It’s Coaches vs. Cancer at Penn State Night, featuring a Game-Used Hat Auction of the special Ghostbusters-theme caps worn by the Spikes on July 15. Fans will be able to meet Matt Paxton of the TV show “Hoarders,” and the first 1,000 fans will receive a “Road to the Show” poster honoring former Spikes who have made it to majors. Kids can also run the bases after every weekend home game.
Concert on the Village Green
Free Friday concerts on the Lemont Village Green continue at 7:30 p.m. with Ride the Song.
Baskerville: The Sherlock Holmes Mystery
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must crack the mystery of ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ before a family curse dooms its newest heir in this performance of Ken Ludwig’s “Baskerville,” opening at 7:30 p.m. at Millbrook Playhouse in Mill Hall. Shows run through July 31 with both evening and matinee performances.
Movies Under the Stars
Tussey Mountain’s free summer Movies on the Mountain continues with “The Good Dinosaur.” Gates open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at dusk. Popcorn and candy will be available, as well as hot dogs, and other great food you won’t find at regular movie theaters. Soda, beer, and other beverages also are offered. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and watch a the movie under the stars.
SATURDAY
Splash, Pedal & Dash
Centre Region Parks & Rec hosts a youth triathlon at Welch Pool starting at 8 a.m. Age groups from 6 through 13 will compete in a swim, bike race and run at lengths varying by age. Check the CRPR website for times and registration info.
Vietnam Revisited Living History Bivouac
Living historians encamp on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum Saturday and Sunday, portraying the combat soldier of the Vietnam era in Southeast Asia. Daily programs include accompanying squads on Recon Patrols and a tactical patrol ambush demonstration at 1:30 p.m. Bivouac opens at 10 a.m.
Wings in the Park
Join the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Centre County and partner organizations for a day of family fun activities, interactive exhibits, and hands-on demonstrations as we discover the secret lives of butterflies, bees, and all of our pollinator pals. Wings in the Park starts at 10 a.m. in Tudek Park.
Black Moshannon Summer Festival
The 31st Annual Friends of Black Moshannon Summer Festival is Saturday and Sunday at Black Moshannon State Park, starting at 10 a.m. both days.. The events on Saturday include live music, craft and food vendors, lumber day contests including log birling, and a beach party in the evening with DJ Tor Michaels. Sunday’s events also include live music and craft and food vendors, as well as demonstrations on fly-casting, canoe/kayak races, kayak demonstrations by Tussey Mountain Outfitters, and a build a boat contest. A dunk booth and silent auction will be available on both days to benefit the playground fund for the Friends of Black Moshannon.
Saturday Stories Alive
Join Schlow Library for a half-hour of stories, fingerplays, and a hands-on activity to take home, starting at 11 a.m. in the Children’s Activity Room. Recommended for ages 2-7.
PA Fish and Boat Commission 150th Anniversary Open House
Register to enjoy numerous activities starting out at PFBC office, 585 E. Rolling Ridge Rd. in Bellefonte at 1 p.m. Participants will learn to cast a fly rod with legend Joe Humphreys, fly fish Spring Creek, be shuttled to the Bellefonte Hatchery for a tour, see and learn about the aquatic insects that live within Spring Creek and more.
Team Ream Day at the Spikes
The Spikes close out a three-game series against Auburn with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. It’s Team Ream Night and fans can help raise funds and awareness for the Team Ream Foundation and enjoy a pre-game BMX demonstration beginning at 5 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will get a Spikes mini-football and there will be a post-game fireworks show. Saturday is also Central PA Food Bank Food Drive Night, where fans can bring two canned food items for the Central PA Food Bank and receive a complimentary Outfield Bleacher ticket while supplies last.
SUNDAY
Arts Festival Exhibitions
The 2016 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is behind us, but two exhibits continue the celebration. IMAGES 2016, the juried fine arts exhibition of the Arts Festival is on display in Schlow Library’s Downsbrough Community Room and Woskob Gallery of the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center through July 31.
Centre County Historical Society is hosting Arts Festival at 50: Stories of the Early years. The exhibit at Centre Furnace Mansion features the photography of Dick Brown, some of the early Arts Festival banners, artwork and posters, a timeline of the Arts Festival and stories from early coordinators of the Festival in an exhibition simply told in photographs and stories. Exhibit is open during tour hours 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Wednesday and Friday through Oct. 15
SCRC Air Show
The State College Radio Control Club brings back its annual air show at 1 p.m. at Centre Hall Airport. SCRC will be demonstrating a wide range of aircraft and their capabilities. Gliders, helicopters, small planes, and large scale planes will all be in the air. Flying styles to include precision aerobatics as well as extreme aerobatics and a drone racing demo. Free parking and admission.
Seven Mountains Summer Music Fest
The fundraising concert for the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra starts at 2 p.m. at Seven Mountains Wine Cellars in Spring Mills. The day features hors d’oeuvres, wine for sale, a silent auction, and chamber music concert with the Curtin Street Chamber Players in a pastoral setting. Tickets are $35 per person which includes the food and concert Advance reservations requested by July 22. More info.
South Hills Picnic Concert
The weekly summer outdoor music series at South Hills School of Business North Lawn continues with the State College Municipal Band. Bring your picnic starting at 5, and music starts at 6.
Summer Sounds
Summer Sounds from The Gazebo in Talleyrand Park are a staple in the Bellefonte summer activity menu, with nine free concerts every Sunday from June to August. Ramblin’ Dan Stevens takes the stage at 7 p.m.
