Removal of a diseased elm tree at the southeast corner of Old Main began began Friday around 7 a.m. It was planted in 1933, university Official of Physical Plant spokesman Paul Ruskin said.
A few years back, Penn State’s University Park campus counted around 300 elm trees. Today, there are fewer 100, thanks to the ravages of disease, Ruskin said. In particular, the arrival of elm yellows, a newer disease in this area, has taken a toll — including on the tree being removed now.
Penn State plans to use lumber from the tree for furniture. Proceeds from the furniture will help finance future landscaping at the university.
