Weekend Plans: Jan. 8-10

It’s been some time since StateCollege.com last planned out your weekend for you. The holidays are a time to spend with the family, after all. 

As quickly as the snowfall passed, the weekend has approached. And this weekend is full of events for all ages.

Friday

It’s going to be very, very cold in State College, and it will feel even colder tonight. AccuWeather.com’s RealFeel temperature is 11 below zero. There are several outdoor activities available if you’re brave enough and wearing a heavy winter coat. 

• Tussey Mountain skiing, tubing and sledding is only $13 from 7-10 p.m. on Fridays. Currently, the mountain has 20-40 inches of base snow, which is coated from last night’s 2-inch snowfall. 
• Want to be on ice but stay indoors? The Greenberg Ice Pavilion has public ice skating from 7-9 p.m. for about $5 per person.
• Want to be indoors and not on ice? Check out Daybreakers at the Premiere Theater. This vampire flick is no Twilight; parents are not advised to bring their young children.
• Or call it an early night and avoid the cold winds. While you’re at it, order some food for delivery and rent a movie. 

Saturday

• One of the greatest aspects of childhood is sharing Saturday mornings with one’s favorite cartoon friends. But rarely are these friends on a 30-foot screen. The Bill Welch Memorial Cartoon Series returns to the State Theatre 10 a.m. Saturday. The free event will show a mix of Warner Brothers cartoons for one hour each Saturday in January. This is the perfect event for families.
• The Theatre will take on a slightly more grown-up style in the afternoon, when it shows the Met Opera Live in HD at 1 p.m. Der Rosenkavalier runs for three hours, including two intermissions, and costs from $15-22.
• Head on over to the Greenberg Ice Pavilion at 3:30 p.m., when the Icers take on Washington and Jefferson. Tickets cost $4-7.50
• Find a good place for dinner.
• Late Night: The boys (and girls) are back in town, and the Phyrst Phamily will perform for what will likely be a full crowd once again at 10 p.m. Or find other great specials at State College bars. 

Sunday

• What better start could you have to the week than jazz and brunch at The Deli? Enjoy the live music from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Hippo Room.
• Show some support for the women’s basketball team when it takes on Indiana at noon at the BJC. Check the StateCollege.com Penn State Basketball page for more coverage. 
• Philipsburg native and master pianist Billy Test is sure to wow the State Theatre when he performs 2 p.m. Sunday. The William Patterson University student has performed all over the world and alongside many famous jazz musicians. More information about Billy Test can be found here.
