Penn State returns home to host Purdue for an evening clash on Saturday, looking to snap a four-game losing streak and secure an elusive first Big Ten win.

After a much-needed bye week to regroup, the Nittany Lions have a prime opportunity to right the ship as favorites over the Boilermakers.

Here’s everything to know ahead of the matchup.

Series History

Penn State leads the all-time series 17-3-1, including an active 11-game winning streak. The two squads split a pair of games in 1951-52, but every other meeting has occurred after the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten in 1993.

Overview and Storylines

Tensions are rising in Happy Valley following each consecutive loss to open conference play, but Penn State has a chance to rebound against an up-and-down Purdue squad. However, the Boilermakers are likely also viewing this as a winnable game, as both teams look to return to .500 with a victory.

Purdue has already taken a step forward in head coach Barry Odom’s second season, surpassing a 2-10 record from a season ago. After going winless in conference play in 2025, the group has wins over Illinois (24-17) and Minnesota (41-13) so far.

The Boilermakers, however, dropped nonconference contests against Wake Forest (38-37 2OT) and Notre Dame (49-10), along with conference losses to UCLA (52-38) and Washington (38-26).

Matchup and Scheme Breakdown

Purdue employs a pass-first offense powered by veteran quarterback Ryan Browne, who’s taken a major step forward during his second season starting for the Boilermakers.

The passing game under offensive coordinator Josh Henson primarily involves shallow crossing routes, with Browne most comfortable when throwing over the middle but losing accuracy passing to the sidelines. While no receiver has more than two touchdowns, eight have at least one, with the ball being distributed evenly.

The unit lines up in wide formations to stretch the defense horizontally before attacking downfield, including with deep shots and designed quarterback runs out of empty looks.

The running game utilizes lots of variations of counter plays, bringing pullers across the line and forcing defenders to fight through blocks and make tackles from bad angles, which can be difficult against an elusive running back in Fame Ijeboi.

Defensively, Purdue operates out of a 4-2-5 base under coordinator Kevin Kane, who returned for the 2026 season after one year at Minnesota. He previously served as the Boilermakers’ defensive coordinator from 2023-24.

The unit has struggled this season, surrendering 32.3 points per game, third-worst in the Big Ten ahead of only Maryland and Rutgers, both at 33.3. The group also ranks second-to-last in the conference in total yards allowed (413.1), last in passing yards allowed (251.6) and third to last in rushing yards surrendered (161.6).

With wide receiver Koby Howard potentially making his return on Saturday, the Nittany Lions should be able to find ample success through the air. Purdue has struggled to generate pass rush during Big Ten play, as well, so Rocco Becht should have plenty of time in the pocket. This game also serves as an opportunity for Penn State to get its ground game going, as no running back has recorded a 10-yard rush since the start of Big Ten play.

Players to Watch

Quarterback Ryan Browne has completed 145 of 221 passes (65.6%) for 1,822 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Bell-cow back Fame Ijeboi has powered the run game with 130 carries for 568 yards (4.4 yards per carry) and nine scores, with Browne serving as a capable runner as well. Ijeboi has had varied success recently, running for 195 yards against Minnesota on 6.3 yards per carry and following it up with 13 touches for just 19 yards against Washington.

Transfer wide receivers Asaad Waseem (FAU) and Xavier Townsend (Iowa State) lead the receiving corps with 588 and 370 yards, respectively.

Former Nittany Lion linebacker Anthony Speca, who transferred last offseason, isn’t a starter but has seen some time, with six total tackles this year.

Keys to Victory

Penn State: The Nittany Lions need to get quarterback Rocco Becht into rhythm early and not let up, taking advantage of a porous Purdue pass defense. He should be able to find open receivers regardless of whether Howard plays.

Purdue: The Boilermakers can find success by getting Ijeboi going against a subpar Nittany Lion rushing defense, developing off that with play-action passes and deep shots later in the game.

Score Prediction

Penn State 34, Purdue 24

This will be the worst defense Taylor Mouser’s group has seen since the nonconference portion of the schedule when it moved the ball effectively, so it serves as a major get-right spot. The Nittany Lions should have no issues moving the ball through the air and might even establish a ground game. Purdue will likely find some success with Ijeboi’s legs, but not enough to upset Penn State on Halloween.
