Penn State football announced six captains for the 2021 season on Monday afternoon with this year’s group including two offensive stars, three defenders and one special teamer.
The captains, in order of seniority, are listed below:
- Sean Clifford (redshirt senior, quarterback)
- Jonathan Sutherland (redshirt senior, safety)
- Jordan Stout (redshirt senior, kicker/punter)
- Jaquan Brisker (graduate senior, safety)
- PJ Mustipher (senior, defensive tackle)
- Rasheed Walker (junior, offensive lineman)
Clifford and Sutherland headline the list as the first three-time captains in the program’s history. Sutherland, who’s been considered a special teams leader over the past few seasons, was also selected as the first-ever player to wear No. 0 for the Nittany Lions ahead of the 2020 season.
This is Stout’s second consecutive year as a captain for Penn State. While he transferred from Virginia Tech to Happy Valley ahead of the 2019 season, the long-range kicker immediately made noise by nailing a program-record 57-yard field goal in a nail-biter win over Pitt. Stout has appeared in 22 games for the Nittany Lions over the past two seasons, and also served as a punter last year.
Walker, Brisker, and Mustipher are all first-time captains for the Nittany Lions. Brisker has high expectations at safety this season, and is considered to be the one of the top players for Brent Pry’s unit. He’s already grabbed 88 total tackles and three interceptions over the course of two seasons in Happy Valley.
As for Mustipher, he has three productive seasons at defensive lineman under his belt at Penn State, including a 35-tackle campaign last fall. On the other side of the line, Walker is considered to be the Nittany Lions’ top option at left tackle, and is even garnering hype as a first-round NFL Draft prospect.
