Penn State men’s basketball target four-star shooting guard Otega Oweh verbally committed to Oklahoma on Friday evening, bucking a longtime held assumption that Oweh would eventually end up in State College.
Oweh took an official visit to Oklahoma on the first day of September. He had officially visited Penn State back in June with at least one other unofficial visit following.
Illinois was among the more noteworthy options on Oweh’s list final schools.
Oweh is the brother of former Penn State defensive end Odafe Oweh and is rated the No. 73 overall prospect in the nation by the 247 Network. He would have been the second-highest verbal commitment to Penn State ever, just behind former Nittany Lion guard Tony Carr.
Penn State had long been the favorite to land Oweh for various reasons including his family ties to the athletic department. In addition to Odafe’s Nittany Lion football career, Oweh’s other brother Kaylen has walked on to Penn State basketball team after transferring from St. Thomas Aquinas College earlier this offseason. In what was also seen to be a major positive for Penn State’s hopes of landing Oweh, the Nittany Lions have already landed a verbal commitment from guard Jameel Brown, who was Oweh’s teammate on the Philadelphia AAU squad Team Final.
While the final ranking itself is likely to change over time Penn State, still has the nation’s No. 11 rated 2022 class on the 247 Network, a ranking that is influenced in no small part by the fact Penn State currently has a robust total of five verbal commitments.
New Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry’s first haul is headlined by center Kebba Njie who is rated the No. 104 prospect in the nation and the No. 17 overall center in the class. Brown is rated No. 127.
The duo join Evan Mahaffey, Kanye Clary and Demetrius Lilley in the 2022 class.
