Penn State Men’s Hockey: Autio Enters Transfer Portal, Will Play at Vermont

Penn State men’s hockey goalie Oskar Autio announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will be leaving Hockey Valley and transferring to the University of Vermont.

While Autio’s previous entrance into the transfer portal went unreported, Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky briefly mentioned during his season wrap-up press conference earlier this month that Autio was exploring his options.

Autio, bother of former Penn State defenseman Erik Autio, spent the past four seasons in State College, seeing the majority of his playing time over the past two years making appearances in 41 games.

In 23 games during the 2021-22 campaign, Autio posted a 10-13 record with a 3.12 goals against average and a .893 save percentage. While Autio showed glimpses over the past two seasons, both in relief and in the starting role, he never fully displayed the same game-stealing prowess of his predecessor Peyton Jones.

Additionally, Penn State leaned on sophomore goalie Liam Souliere who started in six-straight games to close out the Nittany Lions’ 2021-22 season, putting up solid outings in all six games while going 3-3 over that span.

Penn State is likely to go with Souliere in 2022-23 although the Nittany Lions could look both to the transfer portal and the recruiting trail for additional reserves to bolster both the immediate and long term future of the program.
