Federal Agents Visit State College Technology Company Offices

Department of Defense agents were at two KCF Technologies offices in downtown State College for several hours on Tuesday.

Agents were at KCF’s offices at 336 S. Fraser St. and 141 W. Beaver Ave., and State College police had one lane of traffic in front of the Beaver Avenue office closed. Passersby began noting the lane closure and law enforcement presence at around 10 a.m. 

The exact nature of the federal presence was not yet clear, but a statement provided by an attorney for KCF said the visit was to review records related to Department of Defense contracts.

‘Today, representatives from the Department of Defense visited KCF Technologies’ offices inState College to review records relating to certain Department of Defense contracts,’ the statement said. ‘We have little information that can be shared publicly about this matter, but what can be disclosed is that our dialogue is confined in scope and does not relate to our commercial business or SmartDiagnostics program. We look forward to continuing our many years of successful work with the U.S. government.’

KCF ‘develops and commercializes products and solutions for industry and the military,’ according to the company, using technology to evaluate how various machines are running and developing solutions to optimize manufacturing. Its SmartDiagnostics system is a ‘predictive maintenance system for pumps, motors and other rotating industrial and commercial equipment.’

While the visible presence had diminished, a Naval Criminal Investigative Service Cyber agent was seen outside the Fraser Street Office later on Tuesday afternoon. The Centre Daily Times reported that representatives from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service and U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command also were on hand and that the presence was being coordinated by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Daniel, who is Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council coordinator and Criminal Health Care Fraud coordinator for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

‘As a matter of policy, we cannot confirm nor deny the existence of any ongoing investigation,’ Dawn Clark, public affairs officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, told StateCollege.com

KCF Technologies was founded in 2000 in State College and in 2018 hired its 100th employee. Last fall the company announced plans to double its workforce in the next three years and leased another 15,000 square feet of office space in the Metropolitan high rise. With an investment package from local governments, the company committed to keeping its headquarters in State College for at least the next 10 years.
