Harlem Globetrotters Bring Hoops and Humor to Bryce Jordan Center

The Bryce Jordan Center hosted a different kind of basketball on Tuesday by bringing in the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters. Playing against its longtime rivals, the Washington Generals, the team secured a 107-87 victory but also captured the amusement and laughter of all those in attendance.

Following a two-year hiatus since the Globetrotters’ last BJC appearance, we set out to capture the show.

Just two days after it hosted Penn State basketball, the vacant arena began to fill once again in anticipation of a memorable show.

After 30 minutes of anticipation, the fans finally got a glimpse of the talented players they awaited as the Harlem Globetrotters and Washington Generals began warmups in preparation for the entertaining matchup to follow.

You can’t have a Harlem Globetrotters’ game without a grand entrance, and both teams entered the arena in style.

Can you hear the whistling? We sure could as the Globetrotters rounded off their pregame routine with a few impressive tricks and the introduction of their mascot, Globie.

Now, to the game…

Game Highlights

Four Points In One Possession?

If you’ve been to a Globetrotters’ game before, you probably know about the four-point line. If you haven’t, it is simply a line about 6 feet farther away than the three-point line, awarding four points if the basket is made. This line was a star of the show on Tuesday. Harlem Globetrotter Torch George hit four four-point shots in four consecutive possessions.

Dunks, Dunks, & More Dunks!

How can you have a Globetrotters’ game without some spectacular dunks? This game didn’t miss a beat in the dunk department.

Grandma Ma!

Aside from the regular players, the Globetrotters have an additional star performer, comedian and, apparently, player: Grandma Ma.

Tribute To Equality

Indeed, a Globetrotters game is not a serious one. There really isn’t anything serious about the show other than their serious skills. However, the team opted to take a quick break from the show’s lighthearted nature when making a tribute to racial equality at the end of the third quarter.

Fan Interaction

What’s the main ingredient in a successful Globetrotter performance? The answer is constant interaction with fans. Whether it was asking the crowd to move in slow-motion, having fans do the wave, or even inviting a lucky fan onto the court, the Globetrotters showed why they have been around for just under a century and remain popular.

It’s safe to say that on Tuesday night, the Globetrotters helped to make Happy Valley even happier.
