Charles W. “Skip” Schrope, Sr., 92, of Bellefonte, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Wynwood House Greenhills in State College. Born February 24, 1933, in Williamsport, Skip was the son of the late Charles W. and Grace T. (Shomper) Schrope. On June 12, 1954, in Tremont, he married the love of his life, Doris M. Klinger. They shared 58 wonderful years of marriage before Doris’s passing on July 16, 2012.
Skip was a 1951 graduate of Tremont High School and went on to attend Temple University. He dedicated 31 years of his career to MetLife Insurance Company as an insurance agent, becoming Assistant Sales Manager and serving his clients with integrity and care. He was a C.L.U. (Chartered Life Underwriter) agent, earning his certificate through the American College of Financia Services. He was one of the first in this area to earn this and was very proud of his achievement. After retiring, he partnered with his son in co-owning Kitchen Klassics, a venture that brought him great joy.
A devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Bellefonte, Skip lived a life of faith and service. He was also a proud and active member of the Bellefonte Kiwanis Club for over 40 years, where he served as both president and secretary, reflecting his commitment to community and fellowship.
Skip had a love for the outdoors and cherished time spent hunting, fishing, playing cards, and taking scenic drives through the mountains. He was a founding member of Camp Bucknell. He and Doris created countless memories camping at Ferry Boat Campground for over three decades. One of Skip’s greatest pleasures was ice cream—especially homemade. A beloved Sunday tradition with his children was making and sharing a fresh batch together.
A natural conversationalist, Skip had the rare gift of turning strangers into friends. After Doris’s passing, he moved to Graystone Court Villas in Bellefonte, where he continued to form lasting friendships. Whether playing Pinochle or bingo, relaxing in the social room, or sharing a funny story, Skip brought laughter and light to those around him. His sense of humor and warm spirit were his trademarks, and he deeply valued connection with others.
Skip is survived by his two children: Deborah A. Hanslovan and her husband, Jerry, of Camp Hill; and Charles W. Schrope, Jr., and his wife, Becky, of Snow Shoe. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Charles J. Schrope (Julie) of Vista, CA; Abigail G. Lowry (Sherman) of Lewistown; Timothy A. Ray (Sarah) of Port Matilda; Carl Gemmati (Laura) of Bellefonte; Jason Hanslovan (Jenny) of Sterling, VA; and Ryan Hanslovan (Amanda) of Philipsburg; as well as twelve great-grandchildren: Emilie, Jaynie, William, Jordan, Armor, Gene, Dominic, Kamdyn, Emmalynn, Sherman, Levi, and Bella. He will also be deeply missed by his dear friend, Shirley Lucas of Pleasant Gap.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Skip was preceded in death by his three sisters: Shirley Leuschner, Sylvia Eisenacher, and Martha Evans. He was the last surviving member of his generation.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church in Bellefonte, with Pastor Douglas Conway officiating. The burial will be private at Centre County Memorial Park in State College.
