Frances R. Houtz, 93, of Spring Mills, entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 16, 2026. Born on September 26, 1932, in Centre Hall, she was the daughter of the late James B. and Ida Mae (Rearick) Royer. On November 1, 1952, in Centre Hall, she married James N. Houtz, Sr, who preceded her in death on August 29, 1985.

Frances graduated from Centre Hall – Potter High School in 1950. She earned a certificate from a business school in Altoona. She worked at Penn State University in the dairy office as a secretary before becoming a homemaker and caretaker for her family and their farm.

Frances was a woman strong in her faith, selfless and kind hearted. She was dedicated to her family and loved her role as homemaker and farm wife. She truly loved to do laundry, wash dishes and always made sure that food was plentiful for all. Memories of her waving goodbye from her kitchen window of her farmhouse will remain forever cherished by her loved ones.

Frances enjoyed spending time with family and visiting them when she took road trips. She spent time listening to music and square dancing, but her favorite activities were getting on the floor to play with her grandchildren and relaxing on her porch swing with family.

Frances is survived by eight children, Diane Houtz of Houtzdale, James N. Houtz, Jr (Vicky) of Greenville, SC, Dennis R. Houtz of Spring Mills, Nevin J. Houtz (Sandra) of Spring Mills, Marie H. Flick (Ed, Jr) of Centre Hall, Nelson K. Houtz of Rebersburg, Marlin K. Houtz (Helen) of Greenville, SC, and Carol H. Mellott (Kevin) of Lamar; one daughter in-law, Barbara Irwin of Centre Hall; 25 grandchildren; and 61 great grandchildren.

Along with her husband and parents, Frances was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth L. Houtz and her only sister, Evelyn R. McGill.

The family would like to thank the caregivers that helped her in recent years and the hospital nursing staff. A special thank you to her dear friends at Wynwood House.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, from 9am – 11am at the Barbara Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Centre Hall. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11am with Pastor Rick Gilbaugh officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Brush Valley.
