Richard S. Smalley, 60, of Spring Mills, died Friday, October 27, 2017 in Pleasant Gap.

He was born March 14, 1957 in Bellefonte, PA, a son of the late Richard E. and Dorothy Jean (Erzal) Smalley.

Rick graduated from the Bellefonte High School in 1975; he then went on to work at Penn State in the Chemistry Department retiring after 25 years of service.

His memberships included: the Pleasant Gap Fire Company, the VFW Post 1600 in Bellefonte, the Bellefonte Moose, the American Legion Post 867 in Pleasant Gap, the American Legion Post 779 in Centre Hall, and an SAL member in the American Legion Post 245 in State College.

Rick loved baseball, he umpired many little league games. He played baseball for the Pleasant Gap Peppers and also various softball teams in the area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends. Rick was well known in Centre County for his avid involvement in the community.

Surviving Rick is one daughter; Nicole Smalley (Josh Knorovsky); his wife, Cathie Smalley and her two children, Jason (Rachel) and Carly; two grandchildren, Kamryn and Levi Knorovsky. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and many cousins.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Becky Gross.

Friends will be received from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. Friends will also be received from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the St. Mark Lutheran Church, 160 N. Main St. Pleasant Gap, A memorial service will follow with the Reverend Kevin Shock officiating. Entombment will take place at Centre County Memorial Park, and a celebration of Rick’s life will be held at the Pleasant Gap Legion following the graveside services.
