Steven W. Mitchell, 67, of Howard, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born on August 29, 1957, in Lock Haven, he was the son of the late Shirley (Peters) Mayes and James “Tip” Mitchell of Bellefonte.
On March 2, 2001, Steven married Amy L. Bierly in Bellefonte. She survives at their home in Howard.
A 1975 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School, Steven spent much of his career working for various local manufacturing companies before joining the Custodial Department at Lock Haven University.
Steven was of the Christian faith and had a deep love for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed hunting, mountain drives, time at the family camp, and sitting around the campfire with a cold Genny Light. He was a passionate fan of NASCAR and Penn State Football, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Amy; his father, James “Tip” Mitchell, and stepmother, Kathy; his daughter, Stephanie K. Matis and her husband, Drew, of Howard; and his stepson, Douglas E. Bennett and his wife, Chacea, of Julian.
Also surviving are his siblings: Spencer Mitchell (Nancy) of Howard, Wendy Brungard (Jeff) of Blanchard, and Jason Mitchell (Mary) of Zion; as well as four beloved grandchildren: Kaleb Matis, Luke Matis, Grayson Bennett, and Brynlee Bennett. Grayson, who lived with Steven and Amy, was fondly known as “Pap’s boy.”
Along with his mother, Steven was preceded in death by his stepfather, Thomas Mayes and his stepdaughter, Rebecca Bennett.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Milesburg. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor David Pencek officiating. Interment will be private at the Church of Christ Cemetery in Blanchard.
