Penn State Catcher Matt Wood Selected by Milwaukee Brewers in MLB Draft

Matt Wood is one step closer to The Show.

The Milwaukee Brewers on Monday took the former Penn State catcher in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball Draft with the No. 132 overall pick. Wood’s became the highest-selected position player in Penn State, breaking fellow catcher Ben Heath’s record of pick No. 153 in 2010.

In his three seasons with the Nittany Lions, Wood was a force at the plate with an overall .340 batting average and a .552 slugging average. He also scored 81 runs for the blue and white, along with 132 hits.

His best season came in 2022 when he scored more than 18% of Penn State’s runs with 55 to his name. Wood totaled 12 home runs, 15 doubles, and 53 RBI en route to being named first-team All-Big Ten during his final season as a Nittany Lion, in which he won the conference batting title with a .379 average.

“We are so fired up for Matt to realize his dream of playing professional baseball,” Penn State baseball head coach Rob Cooper said in a statement. “He has worked extremely hard to get this opportunity and now the real work begins. Congratulations, Woody, the Brewers are getting a good one!”
