Updated at 2:15 p.m. on June 24: This story has been updated with additional information released by police on Thursday afternoon.

A South Dakota man who allegedly fled a traffic stop died after crashing Wednesday night on Interstate 80 in Marion Township, according to state police at Lamar.

At about 8 p.m., a state trooper attempted to stop a 2004 Nissan Titan driven by 34-year-old Daryl Gakin near exit 178 of I-80 westbound in Lamar Township, Clinton County. The driver of the Titan did not stop “and continued to flee at a high rate of speed,” according to a state police report.

Gakin struck the end of a guardrail at mile marker 165.7 in Centre County and the pickup truck “rolled over numerous times,” before coming to rest in the roadway, police wrote.

Gakin was found outside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt and drug or alcohol use is suspected, according to police.

I-80 westbound was closed in the area of the crash until about 3 a.m. on Thursday.
