AccuWeather Celebrates Women in Science and Tech Careers with March Events

State College-based AccuWeather has a series of special initiatives and activities in March to celebrate and honor women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in solidarity with #DressforSTEM on Pi Day Wednesday, March 14.

To show its support for these initiatives, which encourage girls and women to pursue STEM learning and STEM careers, AccuWeather is encouraging all meteorologists and other employees to wear purple on and off camera on March 14. That day, the AccuWeather logo will change from orange to purple on all digital properties and news stories as well. The AccuWeather Network, carried on the Verizon and Frontier cable systems, and AccuWeather.com will profile AccuWeather women working in meteorology who help to make AccuWeather the a global leader in forecasting and data.

Pi Day, chosen for its date 3.14 reflecting the first three numbers of Pi, has become a day to support the contributions of people working in STEM fields and to encourage young women to consider the sciences for their own future careers. In addition to donning purple, AccuWeather will be serving up blueberry pie to employees to promote awareness of #DressforSTEM on Pi Day. 

‘Statistically and historically, women are and have been underrepresented in science-related fields,’ said Elizabeth Soroka, vice president of human resources.  ‘Beginning with our recruitment strategy and philosophy, AccuWeather has broadened our networks and candidate pools to attract more diversity, especially regarding women. Making diversity and inclusion an integral part of our people, processes, and strategy, AccuWeather welcomes women, LGBTQIA, people with disabilities, veterans, and others with racially diverse backgrounds, in keeping with our number one goal – to make AccuWeather’s team members the heart of our success.’

AccuWeather employees also marked International Women’s Day on March 8 by wearing purple.
