Amazon Pickup Location Coming to Allen Street

Local Amazon shoppers may soon be in luck, as the company is opening an online order pickup location on South Allen Street at the former location of Abercrombie & Fitch.

A sticker showed up on the window of the storefront at 134 S. Allen St. on Wednesday with the Amazon logo and the text “Order online. Pick up here. Coming soon.”

Construction workers said the location is scheduled to be completed in about 12 weeks. 

Over the past two years Amazon has opened Pickup Points on or near a number of university campuses, including Purdue, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Texas, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Santa Barbara and the University of Massachusetts.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is currently negotiating an on-campus location for an Amazon Pickup Point. 

The locations are primarily designed to provide an easy way for people living in apartments and dorms to receive and return Amazon packages quickly and securely. But many of the locations also function as community spaces, with televisions, electronic tablets and work and lounge spaces.

The Allen Street location has a retail floor plan of 9,183 square feet according to a property listing by Industrial-Commercial Realty, Inc. Rent, insurance and taxes on the property are listed at a total of $15,220 a month.

The property was occupied by Abercrombie & Fitch for about 15 years before the clothing store permanently closed the location at the end of 2015. Halloween City opened in the storefront as a seasonal tenant last fall.

According to Amazon, shoppers can choose delivery to a Pickup Point for eligible items at checkout. After selecting a nearby location, the shopper is notified by text or email with a unique bar code for the packages.
