It’s that time again.
Area residents will have a chance to purchase household items left behind by Penn State students who couldn’t quite fit everything into their cars as they left town for summer break — and ultimately the United Way of Centre County will benefit.
The 13th annual Trash to Treasure Sale will kick-off Saturday with an “Early Bird” opportunity at 7:30 a.m. for a $5 entrance fee and then a free opening for all others at 9 a.m. The sale goes until 2 p.m.
The entrance will be at Gate B at Beaver Stadium. U.S. Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson will officially open the gate.
Most items will be $3 – from rugs to vacuums to lamps – and for a second year in a row, shoppers can purchase and fill a canvas bag, provided by Wegmans, for $20 total.
Customers can also bring their own tote, which should be 13-inches wide, 10-inches deep and 15-inches high. Larger items like fans, vacuums and furniture will be individually priced.
There will also be a “Best Loot” section where items like iPods, a baseball pitching machine, printers and other items will be individually priced.
All proceeds from the sale benefit the United Way of Centre County and its partner programs.
Penn State students donated all of the items as they moved out of their on-campus housing for summer break. Volunteer event coordinator and Penn State employee Janda Hankinson says if students didn’t donate the items, they’d likely end up in a landfill.
“The recycling of the items is important to me. There is a passion here for recycling items while making money for the United Way,” Hankinson says.
This year, due to efforts by the United Way, the program has seen a significant spike in the amount of volunteers turning out to organize and set up the event. Typically, the event sees about 150 volunteers, however, Hankinson says this year roughly 300 people have donated their time.
Over the last 13 years, the event has prevented more than 800 tons of stuff from going to the landfill. At the same time it’s raised more than $600,000 for the United Way.
