A bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car Sunday night on North Atherton Street, according to a statement from Ferguson Township police.
An 18-year-old man driving a Kia Spectra 5 southbound at about 10:25 p.m. “failed to see the bicyclist in the roadway,” at the intersection of North Atherton Street and North Hills Place, police wrote.
Poor visibility because of weather contributed to the crash. The bicycle had no lights or reflectors, according to police.
Police Chief Chris Albright said it was not yet certain whether the bicyclist, a male who has not yet been identified, was crossing the intersection or traveling on North Atherton Street.
The bicyclist was first taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center by Centre LifeLink EMS then flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Hershey Medical Center. The driver was treated at Mount Nittany for minor injuries.
North Atherton Street was closed in the area of the crash for more than two hours.
Patton Township Police, Alpha Fire Company and Alpha Fire Police also assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Ferguson Township Police Department at 1-800-479-0050 or 814-237-1172.
