The Centre Area Transportation Authority has launched a new bus-tracking system designed to provide riders with faster real-time vehicle location updates.

Offered through the system map on CATA’s website, the new tracking system refreshes the bus location once every second.

“Our new next-generation tracking system gives CATA riders something we’ve never been able to offer before, which is to offer true real-time bus location information,” CATA CEO Todd Horsley said in a statement. “This is a new capability for CATA, developed in-house, and it’s just the beginning. We’re building toward even more convenient rider‑focused tools and technology updates, and we’re excited for what’s coming down the road.”

Existing tools such as the myStop app and realtime.catabus.com do not yet support the faster refresh rate but will continue to provide updates at 30-second intervals, as well as offering route alerts and other rider features.

The new tracker is one of several technology improvements launched by CATA in the last year, including the addition of free WiFi on all transit vehicles and a new tap-to-pay fare system.
