What looks to be a promising deer rifle season for Pennsylvania hunters kicked off with opening day on Monday.

The statewide buck harvest has increased each of the past three years, with more than 1 million whitetails taken by hunters over that time. Earlier this fall, conditions were poor during archery season, leaving more deer available for hunters during rifle season.

According to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, last year 45 percent of last season’s bucks were harvested on opening day.

For many, it’s also a special time for family friends and an important annual experience.

Centre County Report’s Brandon Pelter catches up with a couple local hunters to capture some sights, sounds and experiences of opening day.
