Some years temperatures are warm enough that the ice sculptures at First Night State College never make it to midnight in their intended form, slowly (or sometimes rapidly) melting away throughout the day and night.
That certainly wasn’t a problem this year.
Despite temperatures that hovered in the teens and single digits throughout the day and night, plenty of community members and visitors came out on Sunday for the annual family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration in downtown State College.
In its 24th year, First Night has become one of State College’s annual traditions and Sunday’s event featured activities, art and entertainment throughout the day and into the night, with dozens of musical acts, performers, ice skating and the nearly 100 freshly carved ice sculptures to say goodbye to 2017 and welcome 2018.
Take a look at the photo gallery below for some of what was happening around downtown as State College said farewell to the last year and got ready to usher in 2018.
