Forecasters Warn of Severe Thunderstorms and Hail for State College

Update 2:15 p.m.: The National Weather Service has posted a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for State College and surrounding areas. The warning will remain in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday. Radar shows a severe thunderstorm that’s capable of producing winds up to 60 mph.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch will be in effect until 9 p.m tonight.

Forecasters are warning State College area residents that severe thunderstorms, which may include hail, are moving into the region.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook, which says the severe thunderstorms are expected in the late afternoon and early evening Tuesday.

“Highly localized large hail of quarter-size in diameter and strong wind gusts are possible,” says the National Weather Service.

The storm is also expected to include frequent cloud to ground lightning.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brian Wimer says the heaviest storms will be in the State College area between 2:30 and 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Wimer says the strongest winds will be in isolated areas, but could cause some damage.

“This is the kind of the set up where wind gusts could be strong enough to bring down some trees or power lines,” Wimer says.

While showers and thunderstorms are also possible for Wednesday, Wimer says they will not be as severe. The high for Wednesday is expected to be 77.

Temperatures will take a dive Thursday with only a high of 60 as a cold front moves into the area from the Northeast.

“It will be big change from the 80’s of today,” Wimer says. “The good news is it won’t last long.”

Friday and into the weekend temperatures are expected to be in the mid-70’s.
