Centre County Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts Debra C. Immel will not seek a sixth term in this year’s election and will retire when her current term ends.
‘I have decided this is the time to retire to spend more time with family and traveling, when my term concludes the first Monday in January 2020,’ Immel said in a news release.
Immel has spent nearly 44 years with the Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts Office, starting in 1976 as a department clerk. From there, she rose to deputy prothonotary and acting prothonotary.
In 1999, she was elected to her first term as prothonotary and clerk of courts and subsequently was re-elected four more times, most recently in 2015.
‘I am extremely grateful to the people of Centre County for the honor and privilege to serve them and the opportunity to work with so many dedicated hardworking people,’ Immel said. ‘I have immense gratitude and respect for my dedicated staff.’
The prothonotary’s office is the permanent record keeper for the Centre County Court of Common Pleas and is where civil and criminal transactions are filed, along with judgments, support and divorce actions and other filings. The office is also responsible for the collection and return of bail money.
The municipal primary election is May 21.
