Jersey Names Are Here to Stay

For years, Penn State was one of the few teams in the nation that did not put players’ last names on the back of its football jerseys.

That changed in 2012 when Coach O’Brien took the head coaching job, and for now at least, it looks like the names are here to stay. The iconic Penn State Football jerseys will have last names on the back again this year according to multiple sources close to the team.

O’Brien had this to say last year about the decision to make the switch:

“We want our fans to know and recognize these young men. They have stuck together during tough times, and I commend them for the leadership they have shown. Moving forward, I’m deeply committed to honoring Penn State’s traditions, while building a bright future for our football program.”

This comes after the news that there will likely be another small change to the uniform, as Lions Pride and Family Clothesline are now accepting preorders for official Nike jerseys that include a Nittany Lion symbol on the front v-neck.

On the bright side, Penn State has not announced any plans to create an alternate uniform, or anything similar to uniforms worn by our Big Ten brethren Indiana and Maryland.
