Drivers will encounter lane closures and traffic pattern changes on part of South Atherton Street in State College while a contractor installs sewer lines as part of the borough’s Calder Way project.

On Tuesday, June 2, South Atherton Street northbound will be reduced to one lane from Highland Alley to West Beaver Avenue. The two southbound lanes will remain open.

On Wednesday, June 3, and Thursday, June 4, both northbound lanes will be closed between West Beaver and West College avenues. The southbound lanes will be converted to one northbound lane and one southbound lane during that time.

Flaggers and traffic-control signage will be in place.

The sewer line installation is part of phase 2 of State College’s multi-year project to and create a pedestrian-friendly corridor on Calder Way. Overall work on phase 2 is taking place on West Calder Way between South Fraser and South Atherton streets and includes replacement and improvement of sanitary sewer, stormwater, water main and gas main lines, removal of any previously abandoned lines and providing provisions for electric and telecommunications lines to be moved underground.

Phase 2A is occurring simultaneously and involves similar work at the intersection of East Calder Way and Hetzel Street.

TerraWorks is the contractor for Phase 2 and Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. is the contractor on phase 2A.

Work on phases 2 and 2A is project to be completed in July.

Phase one of the project in first phase in 2024 included utility replacement from McAllister Street to South Fraser Street, and the same work for the remaining segments between McAllister and South Garner streets is expected to take place in 2027.

The final piece of the project, with a date to be determined, will be streetscape improvements from Hiester Street to South Fraser Street to create a shared corridor featuring enhanced pedestrian lighting, stamped pavement, a dedicated bike lane and a welcoming public space.
