NBC: Psychologist Cautioned Penn State Police about Sandusky in 1998

A psychologist told Penn State police in the late 1990s that Jerry Sandusky’s alleged behavior likely matched that of a pedophile, according to an NBC News report released Saturday.

The network has obtained an internal Penn State police file about an investigation into Sandusky in 1998, NBC reported. At the time, Sandusky, now 68, was still an assistant football coach at the university.

According to the NBC report, psychologist Alycia Chambers told university police that Sandusky took a shower with an 11-year-old boy and bear-hugged him.

But charges weren’t pursued at the time after another psychologist said he found no evidence of a sexual offense, NBC reported.

The youth identified in 1998 is now listed as one of 10 alleged victims in a pending criminal case against Sandusky, of College Township. Jury selection for a trial is tentatively set for May 14.

Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said that while the university cannot comment on issues related to Jerry Sandusky in the past or present, Penn State continues to “fully cooperate with the Attorney General, the U.S. Attorney and the independent investigation conducted by Judge Louis Freeh, on behalf of the Penn State Independent Board of Trustees Task Force.” 

“Our hearts go out to any child victims of abuse. The University is providing counseling and support services for any child victims,” Powers added.
