Pedestrian Taken to Hospital by Helicopter After Crash

A female pedestrian was transported from the scene by helicopter after being struck by a car Friday night on North Atherton Street.

Patton Township Sgt. Matt Shupenko said the pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was hit by a Honda Civic at about 7:55 p.m. in front of Hog Father’s BBQ, near Walmart.

A landing zone was set up for the helicopter behind Walmart and the female was flown to UPMC Altoona by about 8:20 p.m.

The female driver of the car was not injured, Shupenko said. The vehicle had been moved nearby and the windshield had visible damage.

North Atherton Street northbound was closed to traffic at the Vairo Boulevard intersection while a crash scene investigation took place. Centre LifeLink EMS and Alpha Fire Company also were on the scene.

It’s the second time in less than 24 hours that a pedestrian was seriously injured on North Atherton Street, though not in the same area. State College Police said that at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, a 35-year-old male pedestrian was struck by a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old male at the intersection with Woodland Drive in State College, just north of Park Avenue. 

The pedestrian in that crash was transported to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.
