Leading nearly the entire game, much of it by double-digits, the Penn State women’s basketball team on Monday night looked well on its way to the NCAA Sweet 16.
DePaul had other ideas. Seeded higher and relentless in the face of sizable deficits, the Blue Demons came back late, tied the game, and ended up with the last shot. That last shot turned into three free throws, two of which DePaul forward Keisha Hampton knocked down with :04.9 seconds to play. The Lady Lions couldn’t get off a final shot of their own and crashed to a heartbreaking, season-ending 75-73 loss at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Alex Bentley led Penn State (25-10) with 23 points, but also committed the foul that sent Hampton to the line in the closing seconds. Hampton led all scorers with 26.
