Penn State Football: Howle And Urschel Named To NFF Hampshire Honor Society

Former Penn State football players and academic standouts Ty Howle and John Urschel have been selected to the National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society for the 2013 season.

In order to be considered for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society, a player must be a starter or significant reserve who maintains a cumulative 3.20 grade point average or higher in their last year of eligibility.

Howle started every game at center last season and was a key part of the success enjoyed by Big Ten Freshman of The Year, quarterback Christian Hackenberg. A Dean’s List student, Howle was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Urschel was college football’s most decorated student-athlete during the 2013 season and had started 24 straight games for the Nittany Lions. An Associated Press third-team All-American, Urschel completed undergraduate and master’s degrees in Math with a 4.0 grade-point average.

A two-time Capital One/CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American, Urschel became the first Penn State player to earn the National Football Foundation’s prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy which is regarded as college football’s academic Heisman Trophy. He also claimed the Senior CLASS Award for college football.

This past April, Urschel was named the recipient of the prestigious AAU Sullivan Award, presented to the nation’s top amateur athlete. He was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Howle has remained in State College and has been an assistant with James Franklin’s staff.
