Kicker Joey Julius is no longer with the Penn State football team a spokesperson confirmed on Monday afternoon. PennLive was the first to report the news while in Chicago for Big Ten Media days.
Julius was not with the team this past spring after checking himself into a rehabilitation facility for a second time to help manage an eating disorder problem. Julius made his battle public last season and earned plenty of fans and support in the process.
On the field Julius was known for throwing his frame around, making several big special teams tackles on his own, much to the enjoyment of teammates and fans alike.
Penn State will turn to kicker Tyler Davis for the immediate future although highly touted sophomore kicker Alex Barbir is waiting in the wings as well. Historically James Franklin has preferred separate kickers to handle placekicking and field goal duties, but it remains to be seen if that holds true in 2017-18.
Franklin is set to address the media on Tuesday morning.
