Penn State women’s soccer goalkeeper Amanda Dennis was named Freshman of the Week by the Big Ten after helping the Nittany Lions to a pair of wins over the weekend at Jeffrey Field.
Dennis notched another two wins in goal against Iowa and Nebraska over the weekend. In the shutout against Iowa on Friday, she stopped four shots on the way to a 2-0 victory. Dennis made three saves against Nebraska on Sunday, including a crucial penalty kick stop with the score tied 1-1 in the first half, on the way to a 2-1 win.
“She’s digging in right now. I think she learned some valuable lessons early and didn’t let it get to her too much. It made her better,” Dambach said last week. “She’s putting all the time and effort in she needs to be great and I think she’s got a really bright future.”
Dennis is the third Penn State freshman to be named Freshman of the Week this season.Midfielder Laura Freigang earned the honor after scoring against then No. 6 West Virginia during the first week of the season. Defender Laura Suero was named last week after scoring the game-winning goal against Wisconsin.
Dennis is one of the many freshmen that have made huge contributions to the success of No. 16 Penn State’s 7-2-2 start after huge turnover from last season.
