Editor’s Note: The State College Area High School Girls Rugby Club recently opened its season. Photographer Patricia Collins took these shots of its match against West Carroll (featured in the gallery to the right), and Coach Bernard F. Cantorna offered commentary below. The girls travel to Cumberland Valley on April 10 for their next match.
The State College Girls Rugby Club has a storied history. It has been State Champion five times in its eight years of existence. It has traveled to the national championship three of those five years, finishing as high as third in the country.
During its match against West Carroll, Maegan Morooney, Gabriella Cantorna, Kylie Green, and Katrina Bodenschatz scored. West Carroll is a two-time EPRU Champion, finishing No. 5 in the country last year. It was an interesting game in the first half with West Carroll pulling out to an early lead. State College answered late in the half with two tries scored by Morooney. Unfortunately for the Little Lions, West Carroll had a super sub who scored three times in the second half. Final score: State College 12, West Carroll 42.
