Police: Eight Burglaries Investigated in State College

State College investigators are looking into at least eight residential burglaries reported in the past few days, borough police said Monday.

All of the burglaries appear to have happened during Penn State’s Thanksgiving-holiday break, police reports show. The university was largely shut down last week.

It’s not uncommon for the area to see an uptick in such crimes over the holidays, police Capt. John Gardner said. There’s no immediate indication that all the burglaries are necessarily connected, he said.

Two of the burglaries — one each on North Gill Street and South Atherton Street — were reported Saturday.

On Monday, police released details of six others. These are the addresses affected, according to police reports:

• 329 E. Prospect Ave. At this residence — the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity house — window-mounted air-conditioning units were removed, police said. Inside, items worth several thousand dollars were reported stolen Sunday evening.

• 130 N. Gill St. In this incident, also reported Sunday evening, items missing include clothes, a razor, change and textbooks, police said. The value of the losses is estimated at $440.

• 513 W. College Ave. This reported burglary, targeting an apartment, involved the theft of electronics including a television set and a laptop computer, police said. A report was filed Sunday evening.

• 316 W. College Ave. An XBox 360, five video games and a video-game controller were reported stolen at this address, police said. The value of the losses is estimated at $650. It was reported Sunday evening, as well.

• 1000 Plaza Drive. Two laptop computers and a TV were reported stolen Sunday afternoon in this incident, at the Parkway Plaza apartment complex, police said.

• 408 E. Fairmount Ave. A 50-inch flat-screen TV was reported stolen Sunday morning in this incident, at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house, police said. An unlocked side door allowed access to the house, according to a police report.

Investigations are ongoing.
