A multi-vehicle accident early Wednesday morning has shut down a part of Interstate 80 eastbound in Centre County.
The crash occurred at about 12:30 a.m. near the Bellefonte exit, and according to a post by Centre County Fire Wire, resulted in a fatality. Multiple tractor trailers were involved and one caught on fire. Fire Wire also reported that multiple people were critically injured.
The accident was caused by icy road conditions.
According to PennDOT, I-80 will be closed at mile-marker 165 well into the afternoon and drivers will be directed to follow detour signs. The detour takes drivers off of I-80 eastbound at the Bellefonte/161 exit and returns them to I-80 at the Lamar/173 exit.
Message boards are alerting drivers of the detour.
Another accident later Wednesday morning has part of U.S. 322 westbound down to one lane. The crash involving a tractor trailer and a car occurred around 8 a.m. between the Oak Hall and PA 26 exits. No injuries were reported.
