The Centre County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a phone scam in which the caller falsely claims to be a sheriff’s deputy.

Multiple residents have notified the sheriff’s office that they have received phone calls appearing to come from (814) 357-3049, with the caller portraying himself as ‘Deputy Brooks.’

When the number is called back, a voicemail message says ‘You have reached the desk of Deputy Brooks with the Centre County Sheriff’s Office. I’m currently away from my desk. Please leave a brief message and I will return your call. For Deputy Brooks, press 1.’

Anyone who receives these calls should not provide any personal information, bank account numbers, money orders or money/gift cards of any kind.

‘The Centre County Sheriff’s Office will not contact you in this way and will not ask for personal or bank account information,’ a sheriff’s office news release said. ‘If you are unsure, just contact our office at 814-355-6803 or your local law enforcement agency.’
