Snow and Ice Lead to Closings and Cancelations

Another round of wintry weather on Wednesday has caused closings, cancelations, snow emergencies and road restrictions.

Forecasts call for 4 to 6 inches of snow into Wednesday afternoon followed by freezing rain and about one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulations.

All Centre County school districts and Penn State canceled classes.

State College Borough declared a snow emergency on Wednesday afternoon. Residents are asked to remove vehicles from borough streets to allow public works to clear snow. “No Parking: 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.” and “No Parking: Snow Removal Zones” restrictions will be strictly enforced and no on-street parking permissions will be granted. Parking in downtown garages will be free until 8 a.m. on Thursday.

College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton townships already declared snow emergencies, meaning street parking is prohibited until after the storm ends and roads have been cleared of snow and ice.

District 6 high school basketball tournament games scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed until Thursday, and games scheduled for Thursday have been postponed until Friday.

Other closings and cancelations include:

– Schlow Centre Region Library (closing at 1 p.m.)

– Discovery Space

– Centre Safe (hotline available any time at 1-877-234-5050)

– PennDOT Driver License Center at Rockview (closing at 1:15 p.m.)

– Ferguson Township administrative offices (closing at 2 p.m.)

– Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority office is closes recycling crews were pulled off the road at 1:30 p.m. The transfer station will be open until 4 p.m.

– YMCA of Centre County: State College closing at 1 p.m.; Bellefonte, Moshannon Valley and Penns Valley at 3 p.m.

The performance of ‘Beautiful — The Carole King Musical’ scheduled for Wednesday night at Eisenhower Auditorium is still on, but tickets can be exchanged for another upcoming performance of the show by calling 1-800-ARTS-TIX or visiting the Eisenhower Auditorium box office no later than 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

PennDOT has reduced the speed limit to 45 miles per hour on Interstate 80, Interstate 99 and Route 322 in Centre County.

A full commercial vehicle ban is in place on I-99 rom I-80 to the Turnpike. Additionally, the following vehicles will be prohibited on I-80 from I-79 to the I-99 interchange: 

  • empty, straight CDL-weighted trucks;
  • all Large Combination Vehicles (double trailers);
  • tractors hauling empty trailers;
  • any trailers pulled by motorcycles, passenger vehicles, pickup trucks or SUVs;
  • all motorcycles; and
  • all recreational vehicles and RVs.

At noon on Wednesday, PennDOT will prohibit those vehicles on highways including I-80 from I-99 to the New Jersey state line.
