Spikes Return Home Riding Six-Game Win Streak

When the State College Spikes left Medlar Field on June 21, they had been shutout in consecutive games and had opened the season 2-3.

A six-game road swing reversed those fortunes.

The Spikes return home Tuesday night with an 8-3 record, sole possession of first place in the New York Penn League’s Pinckney Division and a six-game win streak. In series at Batavia and West Virginia, the Spikes outscored their opponents 43-12.

The latest win came Monday night in Granville, W.V., as DH Elier Martinez had a two-run home run and Dailyn Martinez pitched six strong to move his record to 2-1 on the year.

Tommy Edman continued the hot start to his professional career. The Cardinals sixth round draft pick out of Stanford earlier this month, Edman went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI. 

Two other St. Louis draft picks also made their Spikes debuts on Monday. John Kilichowski, an 11th-round pick out of Vanderbilt, struck out two and allowed a walk in two scoreless innings. Spencer Trayner, a 25th-round pick out of North Carolina, closed out the game by walking two batters before forcing a game-ending double play.

The Spikes return home for six games, starting with a three game series against the Brooklyn Cyclones. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 pm., with Carson Cross on the mound for State College. Cross is 1-0, having tossed 5 1/3 innings for a win Thursday at Batavia. Fellow righty Harol Gonzalez starts for Brooklyn. His last timeout he held Connecticut hitless for six innings, but ended up with a loss.

The Spikes’ home stand continues 7:05 p.m. starts on Wednesday and Thursday against the Cyclones. Cleveland Indians affiliate Mahoning Valley then comes to town for three games starting Friday at 7:05 p.m. The Spikes and Scrappers face off again at 7:05 p.m.on Saturday and 6:05 p.m. on Sunday.
